Findability Vocabulary

301 Redirects
a redirect from the URL requested to another one specified by the server administrator.
API (Application Programming Interface)
opens up the feature set of an application to other applications so developers can create new and interesting mashups. Just as RSS syndicates content, an API syndicates functionality.
Backlink Analyzer
creates a quick view list of all sites that are currently linking to your site.
CAN-SPAM Act
requires you to include your contact info in every email campaign.
Creative Commons Licensing
Creative Commons offers a free, legal means of simultaneously protecting and sharing content of all sorts. A Creative Commons license outlines the ways people can share or remix your content into something new.
Google CSE (Custom Search Engine)
a free search tool that harnesses the power of its search algorithm and content index, but can limit search results to just your site, or a series of related sites that you define.
Findability
the quality of being located or navigated, the degree to which an object or piece of data can be located, and the degree to which a system supports navigation and retrieval.
Folksonomy
user-based tagging system of content.
Google Analytics
quite possibly one of the best free traffic analysis tools out there. It’s free and provides a large amount of data in a wide spectrum.
Graceful Degradation
making sure that your site can still be viewed functionally without JavaScript enabled.
Keyword Optimization
creating content that is keyword rich within reason and doesn’t exceed the recommended 7% in the keyword density formula (Keyword frequency / Total # of words in page = Keyword Density).
Microformats
a series of standardized methods for marking up common content using simple, semantic HTML and CSS class names in order to allow machines to read and understand data that might otherwise be intelligible only to humans.
nofollow
prevents search engines from assigning any page rank weight to the recipient site because of the inbound link. It’s simply a way for a site to indicate that it does not endorse the site it is linking to. Search engines will still crawl these links.
OOP (Object-Oriented Programming)
in OOP, a series of functions and variables (called member functions and member variables respectively) are encapsulated in a class and work together to perform a series of related tasks.
Page Rank
a particular page’s rank in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).
Progressive Enhancement
a layered approach to interface development that helps ensure all users can navigate and read the content on a website regardless of browser or device limitations. The key to doing this is keeping the structure, presentation, and behavior separate.
robots.txt file
prevents search engine spiders from indexing certain content on your site such as dynamic search results pages that may display improperly without user input, 404 pages, image directories, login pages, or general content to which you don’t want to direct search traffic.
SIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement)
a solution to accessibly displaying graphical text using Flash and JavaScript rather than CSS.
Section 508
sets rules and standards for accessibility for the disabled for web pages.
SWFObject
progressively enhances the page with Flash content but gracefully degrades to HTML content for search engines.
Trackbacks
linking to blog posts on other websites and getting an excerpt of your post and a link to your site displayed in the comments section of the recipient blog.
